A season’s work came down to one breezy Saturday morning in Somerton — and the Syls Intermediate footballers delivered in style, securing promotion to AFL3 with a hard-fought and richly deserved win over Castleknock.
With everything to play for, Syls came storming out of the blocks. A well-taken goal inside the opening minutes set the tone, and despite playing into a strong wind, the Malahide men battled for every ball and struck three points by the break. It could have been 4 as one free came off the upright ! Castleknock made the most of the conditions and kicked six themselves during the half, levelling things up at half-time: Syls 1-03, Castleknock 0-06.
The second half saw the home side start brightly, but Syls soon found their groove with the breeze at their backs. Relentless pressure on Castleknock’s kickouts, clever use of possession, and some astute substitutions from the sideline began to shift momentum.
The rewards came quickly — two more goals, paired with a couple of sweetly struck points, gave Syls breathing space. Castleknock, now under serious pressure, had a man dismissed after a blatant punch with about 15 minutes to play. From there, the outcome never felt in doubt.
Castleknock kept the scoreboard ticking, but Syls’ work rate, game intelligence, and use of the extra man ensured they stayed in control to the final whistle.
