St Sylvester's GAA Club was originally founded in 1903 under the patronage of the Pope Saint Sylvester. Malahide village has a strong linkage with the name which is linked to the ancient well in Old Street which honours Sylvester, a holy man associated with the fifth-century Christian mission to convert Ireland from paganism.
The club colours of royal blue with the St.Patrick’s green sash have remained the club colours since that 1903 affiliation.
Since 2010 the club membership has doubled grown to almost 3,000 members, fielding more than 80 teams in Football, Hurling and most recently Camogie.
The club has a thriving juvenile section for both boys and girls with team games commencing from U8 upwards. Our Academy takes place on a Saturday afternoon and welcomes children aged from 5 upwards and provides a welcome introduction to our national games.
The focus of our playing activities are based in Broomfield, Malahide with significant development work undertaken in recent years to upgrade the playing facilities into a club based sporting campus. The introduction of an All-Weather Pitch and Double-Sided Ball Wall facilitates year round training activities and provides invaluable resources to our local schools. Our pavilion in Broomfield caters for teams playing in this area and includes a fully equipped gym for the use of members. Plans are being developed to further develop this facility for the benefit of all our members. The club juvenile boys teams also make extensive use of playing facilities based in Malahide Castle.
Our clubhouse for social activities is based at 2 Church Road right in the heart of Malahide village. In this recently renovated building there are bar facilities, a function room which are open to members of the public. In this building we also have meeting rooms for club members and members of our local community.
As the largest community based sporting organisation in Malahide we are deeply ingrained in the local community and rely extensively on the support and goodwill of many individuals and local businesses.
Most critically our entire club is built on the ethos of volunteerism. Our club would not exist without the help and support of so many individuals who give so generously of their time, expertise and resources to support the development of our young people and our broader community.
At its heart our club is all about providing the opportunities to support our young people play games and build friendships throughout their key development years and into adulthood. St Sylvester's is a club for everyone, for families and for life.
